I am a mineral makeup convert!
I rarely put on makeup as I have always believed that there is no substitute for good skin. My daily routine is this: cleanse, tone, moisturize (this has to be with SPF), apply pressed powder, lipstick and mascara and I’m out the door. In those times when I have time and want to look extra made up, I use foundation instead because I don’t need to reapply every so often. A hint of cheek color and eyeshadow gives me the polished look.
My journey to being a mineral makeup convert started when a balikbayan friend introduced me to Bare Escentuals foundation. She raved about this product and wanted me to see for myself. She knows my main complaint about makeup foundation; it feels heavy on my face and I don’t like I’m camouflaging my skin. But when I applied the foundation, it glided smoothly and it felt as if I had nothing on my face but the usual pressed powder I use. Since then, I have never looked back.
The benefits of mineral makeup
Makeup hasn’t been the same since mineral based makeup, thanks to Leslie Blodgett, CEO of Bare Escentuals, who launched her Bare Minerals Foundation in 1998. Nine years later, every makeup brand now has its own line of mineral makeup as they still pour in funds into R&D to develop other natural-sounding “mineral” formulations and ingredients such as titanium dioxide, mica and potassium, flooding the market with better alternatives.
Apart from being promoted as sheer and naturally looking hence less irritating to the skin, it has also anti aging properties, and acts as a natural sunscreen because it is made with titanium oxide, making it hugely popular with women who are much more health conscious today and are concerned with what they put in their bodies. Talk about “green “ revolution in makeup trends.
Unlike traditional makeup, mineral makeup has been shown to have a positive effect on the actual condition of the skin because the micronized minerals used are naturally anti-inflammatory and uniquely formulated to protect and correct the skin. This can be especially important for women with sensitive skin or those suffering from acne, rosacea and other skin conditions.
It is makeup that is weightless and does not clog pores, allowing the skin to breathe. A pure mineral based makeup is fragrance-free and made without fillers and binders (such as talc and mineral oil) and without chemical dyes or preservatives. If ‘pressed’ in the manufacturing process, it is easy to apply and maintain for a long term period of time. A small amount does the trick of covering up your whole face and a very small pinch can actually light up your cheeks with color. The color though, is not overpowering and lasts the whole day. It is light reflecting, making the skin look luminous.
