A new dining haunt just sprung up in the beautiful white-sand beach of Boracay, an answer for those craving for a private dining experience with an outstanding menu and impeccable service. Run by Fuego Hotels, 7Stones Boracay Suites is a condotel-type accommodation offering one-, two- and three-bedroom units luxuriously designed with modern amenities.

Michel Therrien, the original founder and owner of a piece of the land that the boutique hotel sits on today, had always wanted to live in Boracay. From the date of purchase in 1998 to the completion of the dream in 2009, Therrien, joined by his wife Jane Rossignol and partners Mark Rudnicki, Marco Biggiogero and Marco Manzoni created what Jean Jugo, food and beverage manager, describes as a home away from home, where one can enjoy a luxurious stay in well-appointed rooms with 21-square-meter balconies that overlook the sea and the fantastic sunrise. Added amenities of a 25-square meter lagoon-style swimming pool and in-room specialty cooking provided by an internationally trained staff give it an edge over the other hotels in the area.

Why 7Stones? “The number seven,” explained Jane Rossignol, “is a lucky number throughout the world. The Inukshuk featured in our logo and throughout our resort is a Canadian Indian symbol created by an Eskimo tribe. It is a small person statue made of stones, which points in the direction back to home. This is the experience of 7Stones Boracay, a home away from home that offers a peaceful, safe, clean environment.”

Two years into the operation and already its 7th Note Cafe, a 50-seater al fresco cafe, is earning raves for its medley of international and local cuisine.I had the impression I was meeting a Japanese chef the day I was to interview the sous chef of 7th Note Cafe and was mildly surprised when an assuming lady with a pleasant demeanour greeted me. Vanida Ramos has been with the 7th Note Cafe for close to a year, and according to her, she enjoys the job immensely. The Polytechnic University of the Philippines chemistry graduate briefly practiced her profession, but the passion for cooking and food pushed her to enroll at the Center for Asian and Culinary Studies. Stints as head chef of all branches of Big City restaurants in Metro Manila and Microtel, a chain of hotels in Manila, and landing a job at the Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL), traveling for two years, gave her the best experiences she could ever hope for. Training under the exacting standards of a European-run kitchen provided her with the skills she needed to cater to the mostly foreign clientele of 7th Note Cafe.

7 Stones Burger

Yoshi, as she is fondly called, was so named by her grandfather who teaches Japanese language. Yoshi, she shared, means “good.” However, judging by the humble chef’s recent accomplishments, she aims not to be just good but the best in her field. She recently won for 7th Note Cafe the Seafood Challenge and the Fried Rice Challenge (second place) at the Sabor Bisaya Culinary Competition held in Bacolod in July 16. Yoshi, who counts chefs Daniel Boulud and Gordon Ramsay as her idols, is planning to join more competitions in the coming months, in her commitment to further hone her skills.

Together with internationally recognized Canadian chef Spencer Anderson, Yoshi conceptualized a menu for 7th Note Cafe that has lured in foreigners and Filipinos to a serving or two of reasonably priced dishes that cater to the discriminating international taste. The Scotch tenderloin and the pork adobo pasta, a surprising twist to the time-tested Filipino comfort food, are among the cafe’s bestsellers but the dish that’s been constantly making raves is the garlic pesto prawns pasta. Yoshi particularly remembers a Vietnamese guest who would come back now and then and ask about the dish because he plans to open his own cafe in Boracay.

“Chef Norbert Gandler of the International School for Culinary Arts and Hotel Management (ISCAHM) was once at the cafe and gave favorable reviews on this particular dish,” Yoshi shared.

All the entrees in the menu, she added, have vegetarian options.

The rustic beachfront cafe, originally meant to be the location for a spa, is telling of the cafe’s promise to serve only the freshest ingredients. A must-try on their menu is the black shrimp tempura, one of cafe originals, served with traditional Spanish aioli dressing.

“Everything is prepared a la minute. We have our own garden of fresh herbs, and we make our own bread, pastries and desserts. Our homemade ice cream and yogurt are one of the best in the island,” Yoshi beamed.

The party atmosphere of Boracay is in stark contrast to the dining atmosphere you find at the 7th Note Cafe. Located at Bulabog, the quieter side of the island, the cafe is a perfect place to enjoy a romantic dinner under the starlit sky.

“Come to 7th Note if you want to be in a place where you can relax and take pleasure while listening to jazz and blues music and enjoying good food,” said Yoshi.

Under the glowing full moon, the cafe holds Filipino Night, Pirate Night and other themed nights as regular monthly events.

“This year, our focus is on providing a very special taste experience. We will offer food events from around the world with a different country featured each month. We are also developing a true wine experience. We will be offering wine tasting events, unique wine pairing and the opportunity to join our newly forming wine club,” said Jugo.

Shopping at Muji @ The Fort and Payless Shoe Source Megamall

Kudos to the people behind the recent opening of two stores in the Philippines, Muji and Payless, for pushing for reasonably priced but quality goods.

Muji, the no-brand, no logo store that emphasizes recycling is doing brisk business after it opened at Bonifacio High Street in September. The concept is quite similar to Anonymous in Ayala Center which was popular a few years back although the store has a more upbeat interior and offers a full range of items ranging from stationery, gifts, RTW clothes, personal items to food products.

Brought in by the Tantoco family, the same pioneering retailers who have brought in global fashion brands to the Philippines such as Annick Goutal, Zegna and Hermes, Muji has become the flagship store for shoppers who dig the anti-brand concept and patronize products that push social relevance to the fore.

Muji takes its name from Mujirushi (no brand) and Ryohin (quality goods) which opened its first store in Japan in 1983. Muji’s first overseas branch was in London. Now it is in countries like France, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Hong Kong, Korea and Thailand.

Another store I liked is the Payless Shoe Source in Megamall, located at the second floor building A. I was looking for leather shoes for corporate wear that is reasonably priced but very comfy for daily use and won’t cause blisters. Found just the right pair under the label Predictions and it cost just PhP799, a steal in my opinion. Apart from a wide selection of footwear, I like the store’s concept. There are rows of shoe racks where all the styles and sizes are available for fitting. No need to ask for assistance, just go to your size rack and find your style there.

Payless has its exclusives “Designers for Payless” collections, where you can get fabulous designer shoes from hot American desginers like Isabel Toledo, Lela Rose and Christian Siriano, among others. As the largest specialty footwear retailer in the United States, Payless ShoeSource is really the one-stop shop for all you footwear needs. It has aggressively expanded from its first store in Festival Mall last July to more than half a dozen stores in SM Megamall, Alimall Cubao, Shangri-La Plaza mall, Shoppeville, Robinson’s Galleria and only recently, Rockwell. Another store is set to launch at Market! Market! this December while two provincial stores will open early next year at Marquee Mall in Pampanga and Paseo de Sta.Rosa, Laguna. Facts about cervical cancer

Why you need to protect yourself Cervical cancer is currently the second highest killer of women in the Philippines. Cervical cancer is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus or HPV, and this virus is transmitted through genital contact. There are hundreds of types of HPV but only 15 types can cause cancer. The most worrisome cancer-causing HPV types are HPV 16 and 18 since they account for 70% of cervical cancer cases worldwide. More so, up to 80% of all women will get HPV in their lifetime which may lead to cervical cancer. This means every woman is at risk and should get the protection they need. Screening is an important tool in cervical cancer prevention but it can only detect, not prevent, cervical cancer. Now,there are vaccines which can offer this protection and they are proven safe and effective. Just like other vaccines, it is best given at the earliest possible age since adolescents generally produce better immune responses. Of course, the vaccine should be effective against HPV 16 and 18. Consider all your options in vaccines against cervical cancer. It shoukd give protection that is designed to last, creating an antibody that continues to stay high after completing 3 doses.

It’s bazaar season and there’s traffic everywhere, anywhere I go. When I’m too lazy to scout for gifts like the usual clothes, knick knacks, bags, food in the malls or in bazaars, I go to Powerbooks, National Bookstore or OMF Lit and sure enough, my problem is solved. Everyone I know would really appreciate books for gifts. Like a card, it is just as personal, and they get to read it over and over again. I scrawl on a personal message, wrap it up and give it to my friends. Easy does it.

Here are a couple of books and planners I would want to get for myself this holiday season:

Ditto for the DVD movie version, and the diary, and the planner…and anything about Twilight.Whew!

2010 Planners. Everybody is crazy over getting the Starbucks 2010 planner. I got requests to please, please, drink 17 frappucinos before the year ends so they can get that dang planner for free. I’ve just about had it with Toffee Latte or Dark Mocha Frap. Hayzzzz…the things I would do for my friends.

But then, they probably haven’t seen the new Belle de Jour 2010 Power Planner. It’s Hello Kitty mania since Sanrio Luxe Greenbelt 5 opened this year and all around the world die hard fans are looking to Japan, the home of the famous feline, for the latest finds. Luckily, a few of the latest items has so far trickled in to the G5 store, some of the other stuff though we can only find and salivate over at Hello Kitty’s official website www.kitty35.com.

If there’s any other reason at all that I would want to go to Japan, other than its famous sites and the outlandish urban streetwear in Harajuku district, it would be the Hello Kitty Museum. Hello Japan! Okay, I need a visa and loads of moolah.

Wonderful Japan is also home of Kyosho World Cup, Tamiya, Intial D (from which drifting became so known for) and anything and everything anime. It is probably the only place in the world where grown men and woman become boys and girls once again, as it holds so many attractions that bring us back to our childhood days– Voltes V, Mazinger Z, Bioman, etc. If you grew up in the 80’s as I am, you can relate to afternoons spent watching every Japanese anime cartoon series on Saturday Fun Machine. Remember Astroboy? He is on the anime radar once again and some of the kids I know are surprised when I tell them that Astroboy has been around for, like, 20 years already. Count from the time when it started as a manga series in Japan in 1952 and you will realize Astroboy is nearing 50 years old! Definitely, not a boy any more.

Going back to Hello Kitty, I remember a time when anyone in class who owns Sanrio items, Hello Kitty or My Melody, such as pencil cases, bags, etc. were instant celebs as they are so so expensive and cute. Now that I’m a grown woman, I still could not shake off my enthusiasm for Hello Kitty so it was a brilliant idea to open Sanrio Luxe at Greenbelt 5.

New Moon starts its regular run today

It’s official. I am now a Jacob Black/Taylor Lautner fan after I’ve watched New Moon last night at the Powerplant mall. A friend gave me tickets to the advance screening of the much anticipated movie of the year. Although reviews have not been very good, any Twilight Saga fan will not pass up the chance to once again see these well-loved characters come alive on screen. I love the first movie installment, New Moon is better read than seen onscreen but who cares? I love Stephenie Meyer’s take on vampires more than I do Anne Rice’s, which is darker and had sexual undertones. While Rice has totally departed from the vampires and witches that made her famous (Interview with a Vampire) and has since moved on to tackle stories of redemption (angels) and religion, Meyer has cashed in on the total fascination we have over vampires and werewolves. That, and the “kilig” factor that Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner have brought on and off screen, has sparked a deluge of Rice-Meyer wannabes who have come out with their vampire tales in the hope of one day seeing their own novels adapted to the screen, earning them millions such as what these two authors have accomplished in so little time.

Anyway, I urge you to see New Moon as it is a very entertaining film. I simply love the Volturi and wished Aro and Jane (Dakota Fanning) and the rest have more screen time. Perhaps on the third installment.

Taking care of knitted wear

It’s 39 days to Christmas and the air is getting nippy. Knitted blouses that skim the figure and spell sexy are a better alternative to wearing figure-hiding cardigans and lightweight jackets. They’re a staple with Makati office people who pair them off with skirts and low heeled pumps. Think US First Lady Michelle Obama, who pairs off her light weight weave cardigans with belts when she’s not in blazers.
On casual days, I wear jeans with my favorite Lulu Tan Gan knit blouse (she makes the most wonderful knits I swear) which are light, yet durable and stylish. But then, if you’re trying to save a few bucks, I can bet you can get beautiful knitted blouses at the ladies’ section of Landmark Makati. They carry a lot of knitted blouses and cardigans that costs around PHp 300-500. I have a few that I bought five years ago and still wear mostly with jeans when I go malling.

How to wear knits:

Knits, like I said, are casual yet sexy. Figure-flattering knits are wide V-neck pullovers or cardigans for curvy figures. For small-breasted women, wide collars and cowl necks work best. Body-hugging scoopnecks flatter tall, boyish frames.

- Knits are made from a variety of fabrics so you need to read the label to know how best to care for them. If the label recommends hand washing, use a mild detergent in lukewarm water. Soak the garment for several minutes and rinse.
