Applying foundation that does not look flat

Applying foundation can be very tricky since it’s not just covering the flaws, allowing for a perfect canvass when you apply blush and eyeshadow. One concern of mine is that whenever I put on foundation, my face tends to look flat. Yet, when I have it professionally done, it looks natural and there are shadows in the right places. 

When I have a big part in the wedding, I usually have my makeup done at the salon because in my past experience, my own efforts at makeup application make my face look flat in photos.
